What has changed?
New Fire Safety Legislation- Fire(Scotland) Act 2005
Main Changes
- Fire certificates will no longer have legal status
- The Fire Authority is no longer able to give definitive advice on fire safety requirements as they are now the Enforcing Authority for this legislation.
- Previous Fire Risk Assessments carried out under the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations are no longer valid.
- Responsibilty for complince rests with a ' responsible person, ' normally the employer or any other person(s) who may have control of the premises.
- Safety assistance may be required by way of a competent person ( as define below )
- Emphasis is on fire prevention through a competent fire risk assessment.
- Identifying the hazards likely to cause a fire in your premises
- Identifying who could be harmed ( including emergency services )
- Identifying control measures to reduce the risk of fire
- Identifying what measures are needed to prevent the risk of fire spreading
- Examining emergency procedures and arrangements for action in the event of fire
- Identifying means of escape from the premises which must be secured at all times
- Ensuring fire fighting measures are satisfactory
- Ensuring that there are adequate means of raising the alarm
- Supplying a composite log book for the recording of all statutory tests
