Fire Risk Assessment

What has changed?

New Fire Safety Legislation- Fire(Scotland) Act 2005

Main Changes

  1. Fire certificates will no longer have legal status
  2. The Fire Authority is no longer able to give definitive advice on fire safety requirements as they are now the Enforcing Authority for this legislation.
  3. Previous Fire Risk Assessments carried out under the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations are no longer valid.
  4. Responsibilty for complince rests with a ' responsible person, ' normally the employer or any other person(s) who may have control of the premises.
  5. Safety assistance may be required by way of a competent person ( as define below )
  6. Emphasis is on fire prevention through a competent fire risk assessment.

Competent Person

The Legislation specifically requires that safety assistance is required and one or more competent persons must be appointed to assist. A person is regarded as competent where they have sufficient training and experiance or knowledge and other qualities to enable them properly to assist in undertaking the preventive and protective measures.

To assist you in this process West Coast Fire are able to offer a comprehensive Fire Safety Risk Assessment that includes.

  1. Identifying the hazards likely to cause a fire in your premises
  2. Identifying who could be harmed ( including emergency services )
  3. Identifying control measures to reduce the risk of fire
  4. Identifying what measures are needed to prevent the risk of fire spreading
  5. Examining emergency procedures and arrangements for action in the event of fire
  6. Identifying means of escape from the premises which must be secured at all times
  7. Ensuring fire fighting measures are satisfactory
  8. Ensuring that there are adequate means of raising the alarm
  9. Supplying a composite log book for the recording of all statutory tests
